Electronic Engineer (m/f)

SOLEIL is the French national synchrotron facility, located on the Saclay Plateau near Paris. It is a multi-disciplinary instrument and research laboratory whose mission is to conduct research using synchrotron radiation, to develop cutting edge instrumentation on the beamlines, and to make these developments available to the scientific community. SOLEIL synchrotron, a unique tool for both academic research and industrial applications across a wide range of disciplines including physics, biology, chemistry etc., opened in 2008. It is used annually by thousands researchers from France and abroad. SOLEIL is based on a synchrotron source that is state-of-the-art both in terms of brilliance and stability. This large scale facility, a partner of the Université Paris Saclay, is a “publically owned” private company, founded by the CNRS and the CEA.

The physicist or engineer that we look for shall work as a member of the Diagnostics and Timing group, which belong to the Accelerator and Engineering Division of SOLEIL. The group is currently composed of 4 engineers and 2 technicians. The engineer will refer to the group leader.

The Diagnostics and Timing Group is responsible of the conception, design, tests and operation of:

  • The diagnostic systems and instrumentation to characterize and stabilize the beams of SOLEIL (intensity, transverse and longitudinal size, position, filling pattern…).
  • The timing system for the accelerators and the beamlines.
  • The diagnostic systems for other accelerators in the frame of transversal collaborations (ThomX, COXINEL, etc…).

I.Mission

Availability and reliability of the different diagnostic systems for the three accelerators of SOLEIL are critically important for an efficient use of the photon beam. The engineer will participate in the maintenance in optimal operational condition of diagnostic systems and will participate in their evolution depending on the accelerator and beamline requirements.

In the context of the upgrade project for SOLEIL storage ring, future electron beam transverse sizes will be significantly reduced, leading to highly constraint specifications for diagnostic acquisition systems, in terms of resolution and stability.

The engineer will have to conduct studies and design in signal processing for the electronic systems of the future diagnostics of the accelerators to meet those specifications.

In particular:

  • ·He/She will be in charge of the activities related to the electronics for the Beam Position Monitors. Interacting with the group members, he/she will prepare and carry on the upgrade of the beam position monitor electronic system (160 modules). This will have to be done relying on collaboration with partner institutes and with industrials.
  • ·He/She will participate in the evolution of the orbit correction system to address the new specifications of the future machine.

He/She will have a global vision of the beam stability issues that is not limited to the storage ring, but considering also the beamlines, to propose innovative solutions for feedback systems.

II.Responsibility and Tasks

He/She prepare and carry on the upgrade of the BPM electronic system:

  • Study and analysis of the different technologies and existing developments (commercial market or institutes R&D) and adaptation with SOLEIL requirements.
  • Perform tests and measures to characterize performances of existing electronics/developments, and data analysis.
  • Participate in developments in case of collaborations.
  • Definition of priorities and selection of hardware.
  • Maintenance in operational condition the existing systems.

He/She will propose innovating systems for beam stabilization down to the beamline samples.

He/She interacts efficiently with interlocutors internally (machine physicist, beamlines, control-command…) and externally (collaborators from other institutes or industrial companies) to design diagnostic systems suited to the need.

He/She conducts developments of parts of the diagnostics and in particular the electronic part.

He/She presents its/her results at international conferences and publishes its/her work.

III.Academic degrees and professional experience

The present recruitment is addressed to candidates possessing engineering or PhD degree (or equivalent) specialized in electronics and signal processing (or similar speciality). A minimum of three years professional experience in the study and design of electronic devices is strongly preferred. Ability in conducting project is required with particular taste for teamwork. Autonomy and initiatives are major assets for this position. Lastly, a good level in English is essential. Successful applicant will have to represent SOLEIL at international conferences and during visits at institutes abroad.

The present offer concerns a contract with indefinite duration (i.e. permanent post). The salary shall be based on the salary standards established at SOLEIL, and shall be determined according to qualification and professional experience of the successful candidate.

The present post requires participation in the running and exploitation of the facility in the form of shifts, standby and on-call services, which occupy up to 15% of the total working time. The working language can be English instead of French. However, knowledge of French is a large added value. The successful candidate shall be asked to represent SOLEIL at international conferences and workshops, as well as at laboratories abroad.
