SOLEIL II - Come to SOLEIL
- Phonebook & CONTACTS
SOLEIL is the French national synchrotron facility, located on the Saclay Plateau near Paris. It is a multi-disciplinary instrument and research laboratory whose mission is to conduct research using synchrotron radiation, to develop cutting edge instrumentation on the beamlines, and to make these developments available to the scientific community. SOLEIL synchrotron, a unique tool for both academic research and industrial applications across a wide range of disciplines including physics, biology, chemistry etc., opened in 2008. It is used annually by thousands researchers from France and abroad. SOLEIL is based on a synchrotron source that is state-of-the-art both in terms of brilliance and stability. This large scale facility, a partner of the Université Paris Saclay, is a “publically owned” private company, founded by the CNRS and the CEA.
The accelerator physicist that we look for shall work as a member of the Accelerator Physics group, which belongs to the Accelerator and Engineering Division of SOLEIL. The group is currently composed of five physicists, a postdoc and a PhD thesis student.
The Accelerator Physics group is engaged in the definition and the optimization of the functioning of the accelerator complex at SOLEIL, the operation modes as well as the tuning of electron and photon beams. It defines, as a function of scientific needs of the beamlines, the technical characteristics of the projects that are to be brought up and accomplished, from their initial conception phase up to completion.
I.Mission
The primary mission of the accelerator physicist searched is to carry out theoretical and experimental beam dynamics studies of an electron beam in a storage ring. The studies shall initially be oriented towards the foreseen major upgrade of the SOLEIL storage ring, with a priority in the field of collective effects. If the candidate possesses a high level of accelerator physics expertise in a domain elsewhere than the collective effects, that expertise shall equally be taken into consideration.
II.Responsability and tasks
1.Studies and mastering of collective effects in the present SOLEIL ring as well as the future one. Specifically, numerical, theoretical and experimental evaluations of:
- Coupling impedance
- Coherent instabilities of the stored beam
- Intra Beam Scattering (IBS) and Touschek beam lifetime
2.Participation in machine study shifts to characterize experimentally the machine and the beam, as well as to optimize the machine and beam parameters with respect to the requests of beamlines in different operating modes.
3.Development and maintenance of numerical programs used for simulation studies.
- Codes developed at SOLEIL for the studies of collective effects (mbtrack, rwmbi, …)
- Maintenance of commercial programs such as GdfidL, ABCI and MOSES
- Collaboration with other members of the group for the maintenance of other numerical codes used for beam dynamics studies
III.Academic degrees and professional experiences
The present recruitment is addressed to candidates possessing the PhD degree or its equivalent, specialized in Accelerator Physics, preferably having the knowledge of collective effects of electron beams, or having acquired several years of professional experience in the concerned field at synchrotron laboratories.

IV.General conditions regarding the working post
The present offer concerns a contract with indefinite duration (i.e. permanent post). The salary shall be based on the salary standards established at SOLEIL, and shall be determined according to qualification and professional experience of the successful candidate.
The present post requires participation in the running and exploitation of the facility in the form of shifts, standby and on-call services, which occupy up to 15% of the total working time. The working language can be English instead of French. However, knowledge of French is a large added value. The successful candidate shall be asked to represent SOLEIL in international conferences and workshops, as well as in laboratories abroad.
